iVia Software Description
iVia is an open source system for building Web-based virtual libraries and subject portals. It has been designed by and for librarians at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). The goal of the software is to fostering collaboration while maintaining a system of rigorous editorial controls.
iVia is the engine behind the INFOMINE Scholarly Internet Resource Portal (http://infomine.ucr.edu/).
The software itself is implemented in C++, and is available for download under the terms of the GNU General Public License. As the project has grown, several libraries have split out of the iVia code base and become projects in their own right, including libiViaCore, libiViaInvertedIndex, libiViaOaiPmh and libiViaMetadata. These have in turn been used in other projects including DataFountains and the Nalanda iVia Focused Crawler.iVia's Data view and interface management features allow a single iVia installation to display pages using many different layouts. This is of value for collaborators in institutional identity management (i.e., "branding") when using iVia.
